Mandalas are generally classified into four types:
- The Great Mandala
- The Samaya Mandala
- The Dharma Mandala
- The Karma Mandala
The Great Mandala is a symbol of Mahāvairocana Tathāgata‘s view of the universe, and the image of the deities is a visual representation of the truth of the universe.
The Great Mandala is further divided into the Womb Realm Mandala and the Diamond Realm Mandala, together known as the Two Realms Mandala.
The Diamond Realm Mandala is based on the classic Vajraśekhara Sūtra, while the Womb Realm Mandala is based on the Vairocanābhisaṃbodhi Sūtra.
The Diamond Realm represents Mahāvairocana’s world of wisdom, it’s the Way to enlightenment; and the Womb Realm represents the Mahāvairocana’s world of principle, it’s the way to compassion. The combination of the two realms of mandala formed a whole world.
During the ritual, the monks will place two mandala paintings on the east and west sides of the temple’s main hall, facing each other. In order to achieve unity with the Buddha, they would hold the esoteric ritual between the two paintings.
